Incidents by Cause

Pipeline operators track incidents by corrosion, equipment failure, third-party damage and other major causes. Analysis across different causes provides insight into which types of incident are more frequent, which result in larger releases and which cause the largest release per incident. Some incidents types, such as equipment failure, may occur more frequently, but involve relatively small releases. While other incident causes, such as a material or weld failure, are relatively infrequent, but when they occur can result in a larger release. This analysis allows operators to target their pipeline safety efforts for greatest benefit to the public and environment. Click on the image below for a full screen version.
